I’m excited to bring this blog post to you guys. You may or may not know that our most recent round of the Pure Art Collab revolved around Doctor Who.
Unfortunately, I ended up taking a break from clay during the first half of this collab and didn’t want to start up in the middle of the event. I hope to revisit this set later on, however, as I had some fun ideas for dragons for these themes.
So instead of sharing my own work for this installment, I wanted to introduce you to the beautiful creations made by Pure Art Collab’s cofounder, Shawna from @amotherofdragoneggs.
Can I just say how glad I am to have a cofounder who’s as geeky as I am? We were so ecstatic to bring this round of themes to you guys! Not to mention how awesome it was seeing your pieces? Shout out to the creators who participated:
Anyways, if you aren’t familiar with Shawna’s work, she makes the most adorable dragon eggs, and I always love seeing how she takes a theme and transforms it into an egg. Her Doctor Who eggs DID NOT disappoint.
Theme 1: Doctor
For the first theme of “Doctor,” Shawna based her dragon egg off of the eleventh doctor. From the brown, cream, and white color scheme, to the addition of the red bowtie, anyone who’s seen the eleventh doctor knows who this egg is supposed to represent. “Even though Tennant is my favorite Doctor, I chose to portray Matt Smith’s Doctor instead mostly because I thought he had way more fun accessories to play around with for a dragon egg—hence the bow tie and the fez, both of which are very cool.” For this theme, I was torn between the tenth and eleventh doctors—they’re my favorite ones (disclaimer: I haven’t seen the older Doctor Who series or much of the twelfth doctor). I love me some David Tennant and Matt Smith! I’m not sure how I would have chosen. Either way, the dragon would have been made up of their distinguishable color palette and accessory(ies).Theme 2: Companion
Shawna and I had the same person in mind for this theme. She created a sweet dragon egg necklace based on Rose, complete with shimmery pink scales and a rose gold rose charm dangling underneath. How perfect is that?? “Rose will always be the companion that broke my heart the most. I loved her relationship with the Doctor (as both 9 and 10), and was so upset that she basically had her life with him taken away from her without her even getting a choice. And we don’t need to talk about the beach scene—will always be too soon to talk about that…” I love Amy Pond as a companion, but my project would have been based on Rose too.Theme 3: Villain
It sounds like Shawna was in a similar boat as me as far as trying to choose a villain. She painted the Weeping Angel’s silhouette onto the background of a metallic gray for this themed dragon egg! I think this particular villain definitely has its challenges translating into an egg; the end result is a fun representation! “I’m super miffed—I have three favorite villains, and only time to re-create one, and even that fell through in the end. I had grand ideas, and unfortunately life said ‘Nah, not right now!’ So this Weeping Angel inspired egg fell a bit short, but is a design I will absolutely revisit!!” As for myself, there are a couple of villains that I particularly have enjoyed (I use that loosely since they both freak me out) that I would love to work with. In the end, I would have created a dragon based off of the weeping angels. Granite clay would have lent itself very nicely to this creation, and it’s definitely something I will visit some day!Theme 4: TARDIS
You can’t have an encompassing Doctor Who themed event without having a theme dedicated to the TARDIS.We won’t even talk about how perfect this blue shade is. LOOK AT THOSE DETAILS! The light on top shines BLUE. “My favorite, FAVORITE theme of this round!!! I’ve had this idea in my head for MONTHS, and was so excited to finally get it made!!! I knew I’d want it to be a Mega size (my biggest), and that it would HAVE to have a light on top! I made the perfect Type 40 blue and freehanded all the words and accents on the dragon egg. Took a while, but I’m so happy with the result!” The TARDIS has such a wonderful color palette; making a dragon from it will be so much fun! I haven’t planned out the details to make the dragon TARDIS-like beyond the palette, but it would probably involve adding some of the details around the outside like the police label. So that was our little recap for this fandom-based theme! There will be more fandom favorites, don’t you worry!
In the meantime, I wanted to give you a sneak peak of the upcoming theme that will start on March 18, and that is zodiac! As for the specifics, you’ll have to wait until we start teasing the themes on March 4!
