Tech Editing

I now offer crochet pattern tech editing services! I have a bachelor’s degree in rhetoric and professional writing from Washington State University and a background of editing in a variety of different capacities—creative writing, student newspaper articles, and now I work full-time as a project coordinator and copyeditor for my alma mater’s central communications unit.

I have been crocheting for over 10 years, and I began testing patterns 2 years ago. Combining my love of crochet with my love of copyediting was what drew me to testing to begin with, and after pattern designers kept telling me how valuable they found my feedback, it was suggested that the next logical step I took was becoming a tech editor.

In July 2021, I completed Fiat Fiber Arts’ technical editing course. Here is what some of the designers I’ve worked with have to say about my tech editing services:

I consider myself to be a bit of a perfectionist, so I was a bit surprised at just how many little mistakes Jessica was able to catch in my pattern. It was immediately apparent that she put in a good amount of time and effort. She takes her tech editing very seriously and goes through everything with a fine tooth comb. The best part was how smoothly everything went for my pattern testers. Having the pattern tech edited in advance ensured that the pattern was in tip top shape for my testers. It was hands down the easiest pattern test I’ve ever run! 10/10 would use Jessica’s tech editing services again!

Jessica is seriously the best tech editor I have ever worked with! She is not only very detail-oriented but also an efficient time manager; she worked through my pattern sooner than she promised but had loads of feedback for me so I know she didn’t review my design haphazardly. All of her feedback was tied directly to industry standards so it was really clear that she knows her stuff. She excels at communication and was professional throughout the editing process. I look forward to relying on her help again!

Jessica of JSThreads provided an excellent tech edit for my latest round yoke crochet sweater pattern. She was extremely thorough and detail oriented in her review of the pattern language, overall cohesiveness, and math. We had great communication throughout the process, and she was quick to get back to me whenever there were questions or areas to review. Jessica went above and beyond with helping me calculate the yardage estimates for the main color, contrast color, and yardage per added inch of length. Then she took the time to recalculate them when I realized I had made a mistake in the information I had provided her with. I really appreciate her patience with me!
