This most recent @pureartcollab theme was picked out 6 months ago when the third and final How to Train Your Dragon movie was announced. HTTYD is one of my favorite fandoms (tied with Harry Potter for 1st place), so I wanted to be able to celebrate the end of this almost-decade with a bang!

While @amotherofdragoneggs and I were tempted to make this extremely dragon focused (duh) at the beginning, we decided to branch it out for people who many not necessarily be as in to dragons as we are :).

To be honest, once we did generalize it, however, I was stuck with what to do for quite a while. I knew who I wanted to pick for my favorite character and rider, but how did I want to represent them, especially since I don’t sculpt people?

On my quest to finding an answer, I started my chronological binge of all HTTYD tv shows, animated shorts, and movies, something I was planning on doing anyway on my countdown to movie #3.

Theme 1: Favorite character

Hiccup has always been my favorite character. He has a unique perspective, he isn’t afraid to share what he thinks is right, AND HE TRAINED A DRAGON. His quirky personality and struggle to find his place in the world is something I can heavily identify with as well.

While I was watching Defenders of Berk, I was reminded of the little Berkian pouches he would use to hold supplies on Toothless. With this, I decided to crochet this pouch, turning it into a crossbody book bag type accessory. If you remember my Toothless bag from when my shop began, I was reminded by that.

I crocheted with a smaller hook and a tighter stitch so that the main body would be nice and sturdy, and then I added a strap and needlefelted the Berk crest onto the flap. I created the claw out of polymer clay and attached it at the very end.

Theme 2: Favorite villain

For villain, I had Dagur the Deranged from the tv series picked out, but with the new movie, I knew I wanted to sculpt the light fury. I’d been waiting and waiting for better reference photos, particularly for her tail, before I was going to give her a shot.

So instead of making something for a villain, I swapped out this week’s theme for one of my own under the HTTYD theme.

My dragons usually have at least 2 colors, but I left her as one (white), with bright blue eyes. Before I baked her, I decided to add some prebaked claws in her legs, and I’m really glad I did! I also swiped blue chalk pastel over her belly, face appendages, wings, and tail. I was a little torn about this part (again, I wanted to be as accurate as possible), but I decided to put the most faith in the light fury Funko Pop accents.

Once baked, I mixed up some colored glaze in purple and iridescent for the eye accents. I think the scales turned out super pretty!

Lastly, I added some pearly pigment to glaze for the whole sculpture to give her the sparkle she’s been described as.

Theme 3: Favorite dragon

I of course had to create Toothless for my favorite dragon. I’ve only sculpted him 3 times, and I try to keep him in my style so that I’m not just recreating him. I think it’s fun to be able to mash up the different art styles and see how they best mesh!

Ever since the 2nd movie, I’ve also wanted to sculpt his alpha mode with those beautiful blue accents. On Instagram, I asked my followers, without context, to choose between UV activated or glow-in-the-dark reactions, and they picked glow-in-the-dark! I found some perfect blue glow-in-the-dark powder from one of my favorite pigment shops, PEARLPLEASURES, and I used it to accent the middle of his face down his back.

I added spot glaze as well to create the illusion of a scaly texture. These are primarily on his face, but I added some around his body too.

Theme 4: Favorite rider

Like Hiccup, I struggled with finding something to represent Astrid, so I chose to focus on the skull accents she has on her outfit. I thought this would make for a fun pin, so I sculpted these around a pin base and reinforced it with UV resin.

To achieve the depth of the skull, I added some black paint to the sunken parts.

Overall, I think they turned out super cute! What to you think of the pin idea?

I participated in my very first @getgeekedauction earlier this month as a guest vendor, and these were my debut items. The pouch, Toothless, and the light fury were available to bid on, and I created 3 of the Astrid-inspired pins to include as an extra fun gift for each buyer! I kept 1 for myself to wear when I see the new movie. There’s a whole outfit planned for the occasion, and I’ll be sure to share those with you on my social media!
