Princess Art Collab

If you follow me on Facebook or Instagram, you may have noticed that I started an art collab last month. While working on my Rapunzel-inspired dragon earlier this year, I mentioned it would be fun to have a Disney princess collab. I absolutely love seeing a group of creatives tackle the same idea and get so many different results and interpretations.

It took me quite a few months to get to a place where I had the time to figure out the details. At the end of August, however, I reached out to some fellow creators to see if they would be interested in joining me on a 4 week collaboration on Instagram.

This would include three weeks of themes we all agreed on (in this case, three princesses), and I thought it would be fun to have a fourth “choose your own” week. The three were chosen from the list of official Disney princesses, but the fourth one could be anyone from the Disney movies!

With the help of my group, we choose Belle, Snow White, and Ariel as the princesses we would all create. We also brainstormed unique hashtags we could use to help archive this project, and that became #princessartcollab.

Now that the collaboration is over, I wanted to dedicate a blog post to this project.

Firstly, I’d like to mention and thank the wonderful artists who joined me on this adventure. Please give them some love and check out their Instagrams:

I also want to thank the people outside of this group who found our collab and decided to join in. You can find them here:

I absolutely loved checking the hashtag to see what new creation was being added!

For my portion of the collab, I decided to make sleeping princess dragons to create some consistency within the series. Their main body color was chosen by the color of their iconic dresses, and then the accents were chosen based off of things like eye color, hair color, and outfit accents. They also all had pearl clay mixed into their main body color for extra sparkle, and all feature pearl ex accents. Each has an item from the movie tucked in their tail too.

First up was Belle:

I think golden yellow is one of the prettiest colors, so I was excited to have an excuse to mix it up. The main accent was gold, followed up with dark brown and a deep red. She holds a rose in her tail.

Next up was Snow White:

While Snow White’s dress is made up of several colors, I decided to break them out and use blue as the main body color. The other dress accents, light yellow and red, were used for the other details. If you’re in my Facebook group, you helped vote for what item she was going to have, and the poison apple won by far.

Then we had Ariel:

With another vote in the group, you guys thought a merdragon would be fitting, and I totally agree! I decided to try a little different style of merdragon; in the past, I’ve created 4 fins in place of the arms and legs. This time, I decided to leave off the back legs and keep the front legs as is. I used the seafoam green of her tail as the main body color, accented by her purple shell top and red hair. I chose to make a little sea shell for her to hold in her tail.

For the choose your own week, I originally looked at doing Moana because I love her, but Jasmine is my husband’s favorite princess, and I wanted to make her as a dragon in my own style.

I used the light, bright blue of her outfit to dictate the main body color, and while I was debating on mixing a lighter shade of that color to use as an accent, I decided to use the black of her hair to create a a bold contrast. The gold is from her jewelry accents. She holds a magic lamp in her tail. I think this is my favorite prop of the four. It’s so cute!

And that is where I’m at! If you want to see more photos of these guys, or anything else from the collab, be sure to check out #princessartcollab on Instagram! We may have a surprise in store about a future collaboration, so stay tuned for those announcements as well :).

Who is your favorite princess?
