I recently got to play with decoden again thanks to Kawaii Craft Kits‘ August decoden box. This is my second box from this group, and I was again pleased by the amount of items in the box!

Accoding to Decoden Tips, decoden is “the art of decorating phone cases and other objects, typically in an over the top manner, with whipped cream, rhinestones, or cabochons.”

The first time I tried it was with a Sophie and Toffee kit, so I’ve been eager to try it again! I am by no means an expert.

I really enjoyed decorating things using the items in this kit, and it gave me so many ideas for future projects!

The Box

The box had so many awesome items in it! It contained everything you could need if you were just starting out with decoden, or it could be combined with items you already have.

The cabochons were provided in groups of themes: happy, chocolates, nautical, and baked goods. I thought it was really neat that these were themed. The creator had the freedom to create a cohesive piece, or choose cabs that spoke to them the most, regardless of their theme.

I also thought it was really cute how the main box to hold everything also doubles up as an item to be decorated!

On top of the cabochons, you also receive 3 different piping tips to experiment with! Here’s what those look like.

Beach-Themed Card Holder

To start this project, I removed the bell chain like Liz suggested in her decoden video. I couldn’t remove the clasp on mine, so I used pliers to open up the chain. This at least allowed my case to lay flat.

I also sanded the part of the plastic that was going to have the deco cream on it. This way, there would be some grit to the surface and help the cream adhere better.

After that, it was time to decide where I wanted everything.

And then it was time to whip! I chose the star piping tip because it looked like a starfish, and I applied the whip holding it direcly above my surface to make the star shapes even more prominent. I also worked from the top to bottom, adding my cabs as I went.

I did decide to add a few things to this case that weren’t included in the kit since it fit the theme. I added different sizes of glass bubbles, and then sprinkled all over with iridescent glitter.

Lastly, I took some of my craft sand and sprinkled that along the bottom corner to look like a beach. I do wish I would have made this a little thicker, but I still think it was a nice touch.

After my decoden was dry, I realized I had some bare spots, so I decided to add more deco cream to fill in the gaps. I think this blended in well!

Here’s how the final holder turned out:

Yogurt Cup Charm

This project was fairly straightforward, although I did have a hard time filling in the cup. Between squeezing enough cream out and then the cup was never heavy enough to stay down, it took a little patience to fill it up.

I decided to use the chocolate drizzle for this yogurt cup. I knew I wanted to keep the color palette simple and full of contrast, so I used the drizzle and chocolate chunks for a deep color, and then I added a couple of the pink cabs to pop.

To finish off this charm, I added 2 of the stickers included in the kit to decorate the cup.

I just need to add a finding to this and it will be ready to use!

Halloween Lid

Once I started decodening, I couldn’t stop! I was actively looking for things I could upcycle and turn into cute containers. One of these items was a prescription pill bottle.

I love creating Halloween-themed things, so I decided to use that as the theme for this lid.

All of the cabochons on this were made by me. I used molds and other inclusions I received in previous Sophie and Toffee kits. The pumpkin was made using an apple cab mold, and the skelekitty was created with some painted details. The other resin bits came from Halloween inclusion molds.

I was super proud of how I made this lid!

Sweets Box

While I have not yet finished this box, I wanted to include it in the post to show the drips I created using the chocolate drizzle.

This was a fairly pretty almond tin that I decided to upcycle. I thought the color of the tin was a lovely gold.

The bright green lid was a little offputting, so I covered that in some coats of white paint after sanding the plastic.

I then worked in sections to create the drip down the sides of the lid.

The color of the tin really inspired me to make a chocolate and caramel sweets tin, so I’ll be using the big chocolate cabs for this.

Which piece is your favorite? I’m torn between the beach case and the Halloween lid. I’m not sure if I’ll have enough deco cream to do both the sweets lid and the flower container that came in the box, but we’ll see smile!
