princess pure art collab featuring yarnandclay

This most recent @pureartcollab theme celebrated 1 year of the Pure Art Collab. While the group itself is still fairly new, the concept behind Pure Art Collab began last September as the #princessartcollab. If you want to hear more about the beginnings of this collab group, visit my blog post about it!

If you’ve followed me for a while, you may know that my beginnings stem from yarn. I originally started my JSThreads Facebook page to have a space to share my crochet work. While I made some articles of clothing (hats, scarves, a sweatery-thing), I really loved making amigurumi.

I decided to return to my roots for this 1 year celebration by crocheting amigurumi for the different princess themes. I didn’t want to straight up crochet the princesses themselves, however, but pick something I could crochet for all 4 weeks and use the color palette and simple additions to convey the princess.

The hardest part of this project was deciding what I wanted to crochet. It had to be something adorable and quick to work up, something I had enough yarn for (after all, I also needed motivation to work through my oodles of yarn haha!).

After doing some searching on Ravelry, however, I remembered the super cute ice cream turtle that Robin of @yarnandclay created, and it didn’t take me long to realize that this would be the perfect pattern to use for this series! A turtle is one of the first amigurumi I made after I picked crochet back up in college, so it felt right to be going back to a turtle now.

Not only do these turtles work up super quick, but they are just too adorable, and I love them! I went a little turtle crazy and crocheted some fall/Halloween ones up for my office too; I just couldn’t help it!

Because my work for these weeks relied on Robin’s pattern, I wanted to feature her in today’s blog post. Robin crochets and works with clay, and I’ve really enjoyed watching the different pieces she’s created in both areas.

1) What inspires you to create?

Seeing other people’s creations. Whether it’s crocheted or sculpted or painted, it all inspires me!

2) How did you get into crocheting?

I remember seeing lots of crocheted Pokémon online when I was in high school. I wanted them all but did not have the money to buy them so I taught myself how to crochet instead 😁

3) How long have you been crocheting?

67 years now… that’s a long time haha

4) Why did you decide to start writing your own patterns?

Sometimes I browse through Ravelry for a long time looking for something to make but nothing really inspires me. Or I have an idea of something I want to make but can’t find a pattern for.

5) What’s your favorite thing to crochet?

I love making amigurumi (plushies). They’re usually so soft and squishable and I love seeing the different parts come together.

6) Where can people find your work?

On Instagram I am @yarnandclay and on Ravelry I am yarnandclayshop.

Theme 1: Aurora

When I think of Aurora, I think of her in her bright pink dress. I had the absolutely perfect pink that I used for the turtle shell and wanted the yellow yarn (for her blonde hair) to make up the body of the turtle for contrast. White “sprinkles” decorate the turtle shell to add some texture.

In the end, I decided to also add a golden tiara in a similar shape as what she wears to help build a stronger tie to Aurora.

Theme 2: Jasmine

While I was thinking I was going to have all of the turtle shells be the dress color while the body parts were the hair color, with Jasmine I had to switch things around. Since my safety eyes are black, and I wanted to make sure they would be visible, I decided to make the shell black (with gold “sprinkles” to echo her jewelry). I feel like the darker shell helps draw the eye there as well, which is what I want the focal point to be.

Jasmine is completed with a little jeweled headband.

Theme 3: Merida

I had the perfect teal color to represent Merida’s dress (became the shell), and I knew I wanted to exaggerate the orange of her hair, so I chose a pretty bright one for the rest of the turtle’s body. The sprinkles on this turtle are a medium brown; I thought that would represent her bow and arrows the best.

Since she doesn’t really have a head accessory, I decided to crochet up a little bow that I sewed to her shell as if she was carrying it at her side.

Theme 4: Choose your own

For the choose your own theme, I decided to create Rapunzel because Tangled is one of my favorite of the princess movies. I had a purple yarn that I think represented her dress fairly well. For the body of the turtle, I used a more golden yellow to not only represent her hair, but also the sun motif from the movie.
For her accents, I decided to needlefelt different flowers and attach them to the shell. I thought this would make for a pretty nod toward her hair on her birthday celebration.
